How to deal with roof tile corrosion
When the rainy season arrives, roof leaks are definitely annoying because in addition to water entering our house or room, the roof frame and ceiling frame of the house will experience weathering if it happens continuously. Before taking action to repair a damaged roof, we need to know the cause of the damaged roof covering (tiles). In general, damage is caused by several factors, namely
1. Problems with service life
This problem is closely related to the material that forms the roof tiles. Because it does not meet the criteria as a good roof covering, over a certain period of time the tiles become cracked, crushed, porous so that they create gaps in the roof, or the tiles are easily broken even during installation, because they are stepped on by the installer.
2. Falling objects can also cause roof tiles to be damaged, especially if the roof tile material is fragile, not strong. Exposed to shocks or strong winds (natural conditions). Moss that appears on the tiles can also trigger the tiles to crack easily and water seepage occurs. The way to overcome this is to find the source of the damage. If the damage is minor and only partial, there is no need to repair the whole thing, only the damaged part, for example, some broken tiles, can be replaced with new ones.
What must be considered if you have done renovations/repairs on the roof of the house so that the same mistake is not repeated is Do not make repairs carelessly and inappropriately, it will cause long-term leaks because it is temporary and does not become a solution to the leak problem.
Patching leaking metal tiles using the right trick
Roof leaks are caused by the nature of metal which is easily corroded/rusted due to age or other causes, corrosion often occurs at the ends, also at the joints between roofs and also above the purlins, namely around the screws, if the leak is even a little bit if left alone corrosion will spread quickly and will result in a bigger leak or even the zinc will collapse.
If there is a leak in the roof, the easiest and most practical way is to replace it with a new one, but it will cost quite a lot, but if we are willing to bother a little by patching it properly, the leak will be resolved, patching in the right way can last about 2 years.
Now we prepare the ingredients, namely:
- Waterproof liquid/solution (known in the market as no drop, plintkote, nipon elastex and others)
- Fiber (met 455) is widely available in hardware stores
- HCL solution (available in chemical stores, if not available, can be replaced with caustic soda dissolved in water)
- Iron paint
How to work:
- Clean with a wire brush the zinc surface to be patched, remove the porous ones
- Then clean with HCL solution
- After it is completely clean and dry, paint with iron paint
- After the iron paint is dry, coat it with waterproof and fiber fibers really evenly
- Then paint again with iron paint, for the paint color can be adjusted to the color of the zinc
Good luck!
